Siblings Alpha and Omega (fictitious names) lived in a hotel with their mother until the school-based, Communities In Schools (CIS) site coordinator secured housing for them through our case-management services. Though their mother worked two jobs, she was unable to find housing. Working with a small, community-minded realty company, the site coordinator generated a 2- bedroom duplex with no upfront move-in expenses and free utilities for three months.
In addition, the coordinator secured furniture and dishware. A volunteer picked-up and delivered donated mattresses for the family. To offset the cost of food, CIS arranged food boxes for the family.
Home visits have also been made to address academic decline, challenges with remote learning, and to deliver hard copies of work provided for students at the request of the site coordinator.
Many children face challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Through a school-based site coordinator, Communities In Schools strategically aligns and delivers needed resources so that students can focus on learning. It is the only nonprofit proven to keep kids in school and to help them graduate on time. CIS uses a coordinated, individualized approach. That’s what makes us effective, along with robust support from a network of individuals, businesses and organizations!
